St. Paul Pioneer Press: Minneapolis cop suspected of sexually assaulting minors he met online (Feb 7 2013)

Bradley James Schnickel, 32, of Andover was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 6, and was being held at the Anoka County Jail on suspicion of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Some 9,000 pages of documents from an undisclosed social media site subpoenaed by investigators reportedly detail Schnickel's efforts to form online relationships with girls in Anoka County, said Cmdr. Paul Sommer, spokesman for the county sheriff's office. Some said that at least three of the minors -- ranging in age from 12 to 17 -- eventually met Schnickel and engaged in sexual activity with him. Sommer said the investigation could uncover more girls. "The contact is reported to be consensual, but because of the age of the children, it doesn't matter," Sommer said.

Sun Post: Former Minneapolis police officer charged for criminal sexual conduct (Feb 7 2013)

A 32-year-old Andover man and Minneapolis Police officer has been charged in Anoka County District Court for having sex with a 14-year-old girl and soliciting sex from at least three other teens ... He appeared in Anoka County District Court Friday when bail was set at $500,000. Schnickel was also fired from the Minneapolis Police Department on Friday ...

According to the criminal complaint, the Brooklyn Center Police Department was informed last October that a 14-year-old girl had sex with a man named “Brady Schmidt” whom she had met through Facebook. Police executed a search warrant to learn the identity of Schmidt and discovered the owner of the related Yahoo accounts was Schnickel and that he worked as a Minneapolis Police officer. The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant on Schnickel’s Andover home and took computers, phones and other items for the additional investigation. The sheriff’s office has since been reviewing nearly 9,000 pages of electronic communication between Schnickel and other underage girls. About 3,000 pages had been reviewed at the time charges were brought forth.

The victims, as per the Sun Post's analysis of the charging documents:
    • Schnickel allegedly began having online conversations with the 14-year-old girl in April 2012 when he was 31 years old. Their conversations turned sexual and he told her he was 22 years old and wanted to meet her. According to the complaint, they met in July 2012. She snuck out of her house and Schnickel picked her up in a silver car with black leather interior. They went to a park near Crooked Lake and he provided her with Svedka vodka and Mountain Dew before they had sex.
(The chat logs recovered by police identify three other girls that Schnickel met online, according to the complaint.)
    • He allegedly met another 13-year-old girl online at the end of 2011. They began having conversations on Tinychat.com in the spring of 2012 and he started sending pictures of his penis to her and she sent two nude pictures of herself. He told her he was 19 years old. They met in the fall of 2012, when he picked her up in a red car at her Coon Rapids apartment, according to the complaint. They did not have sexual intercourse, but the girl told police Schnickel masturbated in front of her while they were sitting in his car.
(Authorities during a follow-up search warrant Wednesday, Feb. 6 found a silver car with black leather interior, a red car and a bottle of Svedka vodka at Schnickel’s Andover home, according to the complaint.)
    • Schnickel allegedly began having online conversations with another girl, now aged 14, in November 2011 through Facebook. He said he knew her older sister and asked to see pictures of her. He repeatedly asked to have sex with her, but never did. They met for the first time last week on Feb. 4 after he had continued to contact her. According to the complaint, he asked her what the police were asking about. He allegedly old her to ‘deny, deny, deny everything” and that he did not want to go to prison.
    • A fourth girl, age 14, began online conversations with Schnickel in December 2011. According to the complaint, she kept telling Schnickel (who she only knew as Brady Schmidt on Facebook) that she was only 14 years old, but he said he “likes girls your age.” At one point, she asked how young he would go and he responded “12.” She told police she could not put a number of how many times he asked to have sex with her. According to the complaint, Schnickel on Feb. 4 went to this fourth girl while driving his red car and asked if she had spoken to police and what she had said. He allegedly asked her to deny all conversations and contact with him.

Pioneer Press: Minneapolis cop lured girls online, had sex in his car, charges say (Feb 8 2013)

To most, he was Bradley Schnickel, a 32-year-old Minneapolis police officer with a wife and children. But online, he assumed a different identify, a prosecutor said. The Andover father of two referred to himself as "Brady Schmidt" and told two of four juveniles he is accused of soliciting online over the past 18 months that he liked "younger girls," according to a criminal complaint filed against him Friday, Feb. 8, in Anoka County District Court. He also lied about his age, telling one girl he was 22, for example, the complaint said. He told another he was 19. "It's my understanding he was quite prolific on social media sites," Anoka County Attorney Tony Palumbo said. "The allegations are that he misled these young girls into thinking he was much younger."
    • As his relationships with the girls escalated, he allegedly persuaded two to meet him in person. One 14-year-old allegedly had sex with him in a car parked near Crooked Lake in Anoka County after Schnickel gave the girl Mountain Dew mixed with vodka, the complaint said.
    • He allegedly masturbated in front of another, a 13-year-old girl he introduced himself to on Facebook and who eventually agreed to meet in his car outside her Coon Rapids residence, the complaint said.
    ...
    • He allegedly sent one 14-year-old more than 15 pictures of his genitals and got her to send him a picture of her wearing a sports bra, the complaint said.
    • He allegedly told another 14-year-old he "likes girls her age" and said he wanted to take away her virginity.

CBS Local Minnesota: Mpls. Cop Accused Of Sex With Underage Girls Posts Bail (Feb 8 2013)

A 32-year-old man has been charged with sexually assaulting teen girls he met on social media sites while working as a Minneapolis Police officer, including one he allegedly got intoxicated before assaulting. Officer Bradley Schnickel was arrested Wednesday for criminal sexual conduct. On Friday, a judge set bail at $500,000, or $250,000 on the condition that he would not be allowed to have any contact with any juvenile females, including his own daughters. Schnickel took the $250,000 option. He posted bail on the $250,000 amount. That means he was released with conditions that include not being able to see his two children.

    ...

Investigators said they don’t believe they’re even a third of the way through all of the information they have in the case. Deputies were looking at Schnickel’s online communications, and the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office says social media sites have turned over more than 9,000 pages of online communications.

In person, he was Bradley Schnickel, a 32-year-old Minneapolis police officer, fun-loving recreational-league hockey player, a neighbor who loved to talk about his daughters. But online, Schnickel allegedly took on another persona. He was "Brady Schmidt," and he lured young girls through Facebook and Skype conversations, having sex with a 14-year-old and a sexual encounter or chats with three other girls, ages 13 and 14, according to charges filed Friday.

    ...

Through Facebook, he told a 14-year-old that he was 22. Last July, he allegedly convinced her to meet with him. She snuck out of her house. He allegedly masturbated in front of a 13-year-old he met through Facebook chats. He sent a 14-year-old with whom he had online conversations pictures of his penis and asked her for some type of sex more than 50 times, according to the charges. ...

In July of 2012, Schnickel allegedly had sex with a 14-year-old girl after giving her vodka and Mountain Dew. Anoka County Attorney Tony Palumbo said this is a particularly serious charge, because the girl was mentally and physically impaired by the alcohol. If convicted, the maximum penalty for the crime is 15 years in prison.

The complaint alleges Schnickel also tried to get a 13-year-old girl to perform a sex act on him, but she refused. Schnickel also allegedly sent pictures of his genitals to other young girls via social media sites and urged the girls to have sex with him. Two girls say they sent nude or partially nude photos back to him.
