    Yuba sheriff's deputy charged for St. Patrick's Day attack in Chico
    Man charged with felony assault, dissuading a witness


    Nelson Ned Magana, 31, is charged in Butte County Superior Court with felony counts of battery with the serious injury of unconsciousness, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and dissuading a witness from reporting a crime, according to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

    The defendant was reportedly visiting Chico for St. Patrick's Day when he allegedly got into a fight with a 30-year-old man in the bathroom area in a building shared by the restaurants Crush and Burgers and Brew on Broadway and West Second Street. Witnesses reportedly saw Magana strike the man on the stairs, knocking him unconsciousness, according to Ramsey. The defendant then allegedly began kicking and striking the unconscious man. Magana is charged with dissuading a witness for addressing a bar employee who followed him from the building and was calling 9-1-1. The defendant allegedly threatened to physically hurt the employee if he called police.
